THIN-FILM HETROJUNCTION BY CARBON NANOTUBE DERIVATIVES WITH ENHANCED SOLUBILITY AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES

2012

The combination of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), characterized by high electron mobility, with p-type semiconducting polymers could lead to an overall improvement in the exciton dissociation and carrier extraction efficiencies in practical devices.1However, one of the main concern in the use of SWNTs, relates to the their scarce solubility. Chemical modification has been widely employed to increase the solubility of SWNTs, but usual reaction conditions limit such syntheses to a small scale with low productivity. Here, we employ SWNTs which have been functionalized with aromatic and heteroaromatic moieties via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and through diazotization reaction under batch…

Compost Amendment Impact on Soil Physical Quality Estimated from Hysteretic Water Retention Curve

2022

Capacity-based indicators of soil physical quality (SPQ) and pore distribution parameters were proposed to assess the effects of compost amendment but their determination was limited to desorption water retention experiments. This study also considered the pore size distribution obtained from adsorption experiments to establish the effectiveness of compost amendment in modifying the physical and hydrological attributes of a sandy loam soil. Repacked soil samples with different compost to soil ratios, r, were subjected to a wetting–drying cycle, and the water retention data were fit to the van Genuchten model to obtain the pore volume distribution functions. The soil bulk density was m…

Composition and corrosion phases of Etruscan Bronzes from Villanovan Age

2008

A neutron diffraction (ND) and neutron tomography (NT) study of laminated ancient bronzes was performed at the ISIS (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK) neutron source and at the BENSC reactor (Hahn-Meitner Institut, Germany). The samples are part of an 8th century BC Etruscan collection discovered in the necropolises of Osteria-Poggio Mengarelli and Cavalupo in the Vulci area (Viterbo, Italy). The study allowed us to derive-in a totally non-destructive manner-information related to the main composition of the objects, possible presence of alterations and their nature, crusts and inclusions, as well as structure of the bulk. The presence of some components is linked to a variety of question…

Inferring Phytoplankton, Terrestrial Plant and Bacteria Bulk δ¹³C Values from Compound Specific Analyses of Lipids and Fatty Acids.

2015

Stable isotope mixing models in aquatic ecology require δ13C values for food web end members such as phytoplankton and bacteria, however it is rarely possible to measure these directly. Hence there is a critical need for improved methods for estimating the δ13C ratios of phytoplankton, bacteria and terrestrial detritus from within mixed seston. We determined the δ13C values of lipids, phospholipids and biomarker fatty acids and used these to calculate isotopic differences compared to the whole-cell δ13C values for eight phytoplankton classes, five bacterial taxa, and three types of terrestrial organic matter (two trees and one grass). The lipid content was higher amongst the phytoplankton (…

Self-organization and nanostructural control in thin film heterojunctions.

2013

In spite of more than two-decades of studies of molecular self-assembly, the achievement of low cost, easy-to-implement and multi-parameter bottom-up approaches to address the supramolecular morphology in three-dimensional (3D) systems is still missing. In the particular case of molecular thin films, the 3D nanoscale morphology and function are crucial for both fundamental and applied research. Here we show how it is possible to tune the 3D film structure (domain size, branching, etc.) of thin film heterojunctions with nanoscale accuracy together with the modulation of their optoelectronic properties by employing an easy two-step approach. At first we prepared multi-planar heterojunctions w…

Evaluation of marginal sealing quality of restorations with low shrinkage composite resins

2020

Background This study compared the quality of marginal sealing in the gingival wall of class II preparations of two low-shirinkage resins of the bulk fill type with a conventional resin isolated or associated with a glass ionomer cement (GIC). Material and methods 40 human molars were divided into 4 groups and 80 occlusal-mesial and occlusal-distal restorations were performed with the following materials: SureFil SDR flow, Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior, Z250 resins and Riva Light Cure GIC. 40 restorations were evaluated in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Elemental Microanalysis Spectrometry (EDS) initially and the remainder after a period of 6 months of aging in a 37 ± 5°C oven. Signature of the 24th December 2018 eruption of Mt. Etna on the chemical composition of bulk deposition in the Siracusa area (Italy)

2020

Mt. Etna, in the eastern coast of Sicily (Italy), is one of the most active and most intensely monitored volcanoes of the planet. It is widely recognized as a big source of volcanic gases, such as CO2, SO2 and halogens, to the troposphere in the Mediterranean basin, and its gas emissions account for a significant percentage respect to the worldwide average volcanic budget. The SO2 flux from Mt. Etna’s plume has been routinely measured by the INGV since 1987. SO2 flux ranges between 600 to 25000 Mg/d; fluxes greater than 100000 Mg/d were prevalently measured during eruptive events. During eruptive periods, Etna’s emissions can be dispersed over long distances and cover wide areas of the Medi…

Molecular and Cellular Insights into the Development of Uterine Fibroids

2021

Uterine leiomyomas represent the most common benign gynecologic tumor. These hormone-dependent smooth-muscle formations occur with an estimated prevalence of ~70% among women of reproductive age and cause symptoms including pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, and recurrent abortion. Despite the prevalence and public health impact of uterine leiomyomas, available treatments remain limited. Among the potential causes of leiomyomas, early hormonal exposure during periods of development may result in developmental reprogramming via epigenetic changes that persist in adulthood, leading to disease onset or progression. Recent developments in unbiased high-throughput sequencing technolog…
